Volkssport clubs to host hikes, walks this weekend

PORT ANGELES — Hundreds of Volkssporters, walkers, bicycle riders and hikers are coming to Port Angeles and vicinity this weekend to enjoy the northwest scenery, hiking challenges, sensory experiences with the lavender, salt air and vibrant communities.

Volkssport invites the public to join them at the Eagles Lodge at 2843 E. Myrtle St. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day — today through Sunday — to learn about the organization.

All may participate in Volkssport hikes and walks for free. Many pay a small fee for record books to keep track of their events and receive small incentive awards.

Donations are always appreciated to help sponsor hiking or walking events like these scheduled for this weekend:

• Anderson Lake Park, Chimacum.

• Sequim Lavender Farm Walk.

• Ediz Hook.

• Glines Dam Overlook. This 12K walk visits Madison Falls then to Olympic Hot Springs Road to a trail taking walkers around the washed-out portion, then returning to the roadway to the Glines Overlook.

A shorter 5K will follow the road to the washout and return.

• Salt Creek and Striped Peak.

• Elwha Delta at the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

This year Volkssport will have a silent auction with all donations going to support Olympic Discovery Trail.

According to a news release, Volkssport has clubs across the state that provide and support these activities, all part of the American Volkssport Association, www.ava.org.

The nonprofit organization encourages non-competitive activity in all parts of the United States.

Volkssporting events take place throughout the year, all around the country. Historic and scenic sites are selected for their enjoyment. Trails are carefully laid out and marked and easy to follow directions or maps are provided.

Trails are rated based on the challenge the route presents. The designated start point is open for several hours to allow participants to begin their adventure at leisure.

In the volkssporting tradition, you frequently find volkssporters gathered at the Finish Point where they take time to enjoy friends, and at some events, entertainment or refreshments.
