Variety of art on view this weekend in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Clallam Mosaic will present 58 pieces of art by 20 area artists this weekend in an exhibit to showcase the abilities of artists with developmental disabilities.

The “Windows of Creativity” exhibit is a potential stop on a self-guided tour during the Second Weekend Art Walk in Port Angeles.

The monthly self-guided Second Weekend Art Walk was founded about 11 years ago by the Port Angeles Arts Council as a coalition of downtown Port Angeles businesses and art galleries to bring attention to the culture and variety offered there, organizers said.

Art event signs are up at participating hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, restaurants and galleries. Visitors also can take strolls through the collection of outdoor sculptures around Port Angeles’ downtown and waterfront called Art on the Town.

The opening reception for the “Windows of Creativity” exhibit will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the first-floor open space at The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave.

Many of the contributing artists will be present and available for discussion.

The pieces highlight a variety of media and techniques as well as ability levels. Local artist and coach Monica Quarto and her accompanying staff of volunteers — Susan Fahrenholtz, Greta Hanson, Jenny Schaefer and George Will — worked with the artists in coaching and creation of the featured pieces.

“This show focuses on the abilities of individuals with developmental disabilities,” Quarto said. “The contributing artists are hoping to increase awareness and inclusion as well as adjust preconceived attitudes and beliefs. They hope to demonstrate that individuals with disabilities can contribute to mainstream art.”

Janie Brackney will demonstrate her Zentangle art, a form of doodling done with pen and ink.

Light refreshments will be served.

Harbor Art at 110 E. Railroad Ave. features the original work of 16 local artists that includes photography, paintings, block prints, sculpture, woodwork, ceramics, glass, felting and jewelry.

An artists reception is set from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Heatherton Gallery at The Landing mall at 115 E. Railroad Ave. will host an opening reception for its featured artists Friday, April 14, the second Friday of the month, but their art is on view now.

Work by Sally Cays of Sequim, Julie Senf of Port Angeles and Lynn Thompson of Forks was hung April 1.

The “Whale of a Tail” art show at the gallery now has 20 pieces, said Sky Heatherton, proprietor.

The show has paintings and sculptures of orcas and humpbacks from Ocean Shores, Sequim, Forks and Port Angeles.

“Quite diverse pieces,” Heatherton said.
