Unity of Effort, salmon bake set Saturday

SEQUIM — Unity of Effort’s first-responder recognition event will include Sequim Noon Rotary’s 53rd Annual Salmon Bake on Saturday.

Unity of Effort will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Security Services Northwest will host the event at its company headquarters, 250 Center Park Way in Sequim.

Unity of Effort is free and open to the public. It will offer tours of military helicopters, fire trucks, police cars and other first responder units from all over the Pacific Northwest.

“The event has developed from having an armored car, fire truck and an ostrich to having helicopters, representatives of multiple branches of the armed services and dozens of local first responders,” said SSNW president Joe D’Amico.

Planned are a variety of displays, vendor booths and show-and-tell exhibits from fire districts, law enforcement, the U.S. military and Washington state agencies.

The bucket brigade competition, straw pile toy find for children, bouncing house for children, and live music all will return this year, along with the annual .22-caliber target shooting contest, thanks to a “virtual” shooting simulator.

Food service will be available from a selection of food truck vendors parked on site.

Unity of Effort also will have live music in the evening. The country music group Scooter Brown Band will perform. Brown did two tours of duty overseas with one tour of combat in Iraq as a United States Marine before forming the band. For more information, see scooterbrownband.com.

Salmon meals will be served from noon until 4 p.m. or until the club runs out of salmon. The alder-fired wild salmon meal will include a roll, baked beans and coleslaw along with an ice cream dessert and coffee or soft drink.

Salmon Bake ticket prices are $23 for advance purchases and $25 the day of the event. They can be purchased at www.sequimrotary.org. Tickets purchased through the website will be available at Will Call at the event.

Tickets also are available at the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, at the Boys & Girls Club unit at 400 W. Fir St., and other retailers in Sequim.

Hot dog meals for $10 will be available the day of the event for those who do not want salmon.

Sequim Noon Rotary presented its first salmon bake on the beach at what is now John Wayne Marina. Over the years the salmon bake has been located at Pit Ship Point, Jamestown, Macleay Hall, Carrie Blake Park and the Boys & Girls Club unit in Sequim. The club served more than 500 meals at its 51st bake in 2019.

Salmon Bake proceeds help Sequim students, the Sequim unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, the club’s AED mapping project and local Rotary youth projects such as the Adaptive Bike Program.
