Ugandan musician to perform Saturday; free event today

PORT ANGELES — Field Arts & Events Hall is hosting Ugandan musician, actor and humanitarian Samite Mulondo during a short artistic residency that will culminate in two performances of his show “Resilience” on Saturday as well as a special event today.

Mulondo will offer a free community engagement event at 3:30 p.m. today at the Port Angeles Senior Center at 328 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles.

Two ticketed performances are set for Saturday in the Donna M. Morris Theater at Field Hall, 201 W. Front St., Port Angeles. They will be at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for “Resilience” are $10 for students and youth, $15 to $40 for adults, and are available at www.fieldhall events.org/tickets or by calling the Field Hall box office at 360-477-4679, ext. 1.

After each performance, Field Hall invites attendees to a First Fed Community Conversation with Mulondo.

The matinee conversation will feature Dr. Paul Cunningham of the Jamestown Family Health Clinic, exploring themes of health and healing, and will be moderated by retired physician and Field Hall board member Dr. Mark Fischer.

In the evening, Executive Director Steve Raider-Ginsburg will moderate a discussion with Mulondo and a special guest from Peninsula Behavioral Health.

Born and raised in Uganda, Mulondo was introduced to the traditional flute by his grandfather and grew to become one of East Africa’s most celebrated flutists. However, in 1982, he faced political upheaval and fled as a political refugee.

In 2002, Mulondo founded Musicians for World Harmony, a global initiative to use the power of music to promote peace, understanding and harmony.

His travels have taken him to war-torn regions, refugee camps and communities affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS where he uses music to connect, heal and inspire.

Mulondo’s vocals are accompanied by such traditional African instruments as the kalimba, marimba, litungu and various flutes.

He has released 11 CDs. His latest, “Resilience,” is not only an album but also a theatrical performance that premiered in 2018. The one-man play explores his life from turmoil in Uganda to the power of music.

“‘Resilience’ is a harmonious blend of urgency and timeless stories of healing, organizers said.

“Samite’s meditative, emotional African music serves as the backdrop to his personal narrative, offering a transformative experience for the audience,” organizers said.
