Two exhibits open today at Jefferson Museum

PORT TOWNSEND — Two exhibits open today at the Jefferson Museum of Art & History.

Juxtapositions and Exquisite Jewels are the new exhibits on display at the museum at 540 Water St. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, with extended hours the first Saturday of the month for the Port Townsend Art Walk.

This Saturday, Kristin Myers will perform music from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the art walk.

Juxtapositions is a retrospective featuring large-scale pencil and graphite drawings made in the late 1990s by Rachel Feferman (1955-2010), who lived and kept her studio in Port Townsend.

Feferman began the series of drawings intending to make 100, but the project was interrupted by an illness.

Forty-two of the drawings she completed before she died at age 55 were reproduced in Golden Hands: Drawings and Reflections, a book published in 2009.

Many of the drawings also were featured in a retrospective exhibition at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art in 2016.

Inspired by the gift of an apron sewn by her grandmother, Feferman’s drawings juxtapose themes of domesticity, Jewish life, reminders of the Holocaust and family.

Juxtapositions will remain in the Ferguson Gallery through Dec. 31.

Exquisite Jewels: The Art of Matt DiPietro, opening today in the Women’s Jail Gallery, features painted figures by world-renowned local artist miniaturist DiPietro.

Exquisite Jewels is a selection of work reflecting on the power of storytelling to explore universal ideals and shared emotions.
