Two Celtic bands bring tour to Port Angeles on Thursday

PORT ANGELES — Celtic bands We Banjo 3 and Skerryvore will perform at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The show at the performing arts center at 304 E. Park Ave. is part of the Juan de Fuca Foundation of the Arts’ concert season and the groups’ “Celtic Brotherhood” tour.

Tickets for the all-ages show range from $10 to $38 and can be purchased at http://jffa.org/events/skerryvore-we-banjo-3/.

According to a press release, We Banjo 3 features banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, percussion and harmonies in a genre described as “Celtgrass.” The Galway, Ireland-based quartet is made up of two sets of brothers, Enda and Fergal Scahill, and Martin and David Howley, who collectively hold over a dozen “All Ireland” titles.

We Banjo 3 released its fourth studio recording, “Haven,” in July, and it reached No. 1 on Billboard’s bluegrass chart for two weeks. The band’s 2016 album, “String Theory,” went to No. 1 on Billboard’s world music chart.

Skerryvore is an eight-piece band that joins rock, pop and traditional music with drums and bagpipes, according to a press release. The group was named “Live Act of the Year” in 2011 and 2016 by Scotland’s Traditional Music Awards. Having performed in over 25 countries, the band is now touring behind its seventh album, “Evo,” which was released in June in conjunction with the band’s own Oban Live festival in Scotland.

Every stop on the tour features a set from each band and ends with a combined finale pitting bagpipes against banjos.

Other Western Washington stops on the tour include the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts’ Rialto Theater in Tacoma on Friday and the Kent-Meridian High School Performing Arts Center in Kent on Saturday. We Banjo 3 also performed on KING 5’s New Day Northwest on Tuesday and the bands performed at the Edmonds Center For The Arts in Edmonds on Wednesday.
