Two authors to present in Northwind series

PORT TOWNSEND — On Thursday, the ongoing Northwind Reading Series features Gary Lemons and Bill Mawhinney.

The readings start at 7 p.m. in the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St.

The suggested donation for the readings is $5. All proceeds support the nonprofit’s visual, musical and literary art events and education on the Olympic Peninsula.

Lemons attended from the University of Iowa, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Undergraduate Writers Workshop in 1972.

He studied with, among others, Norman Dubie, Marvin Bell, Donald Justice, John Berryman, William Stafford, Mark Strand and Diane Wakowski.

He is the author of two CDs and six books of poetry including his most recent, “The Weight of Light.”

He has lived in Port Townsend for 41 years, where he and his wife, Nöle Giulini, teach yoga out of their studio, Tenderpaws.

Mawhinney is the author of two collections of poetry: “Songs in My Begging Bowl” and “Cairns Along The Road.” His poems have appeared in “Heron Dance,” “Windfall” and “Minotaur.”

For 11 years, he has curated and hosted the Northwind Reading Series.

The Port Townsend Arts Commission named him Angel of the Arts in 2011.

He lives in Port Ludlow with his wife, Wanda, an abstract painter; tends his Japanese garden; and talks with herons while combing the Olympic Peninsula beaches.

For more information, contact Mawhinney at 360-302-1159.
