PORT ANGELES — The American Solar Energy Society will host its National Solar Tour on Saturday.
Two local homeowners, Janis Burger and Dave Large, will open their homes to the public to demonstrate advanced energy-saving technologies as part of the tour.
Janis Burger, a retired park ranger, built her home with straw bale insulation, a photovoltaic system, direct solar water heating and rainwater collection for irrigation.
Burger’s home, at 1328 Bent Cedars Way, Port Angeles, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dave Large, a retired engineer who worked in climate-friendly home design for 50 years, has a demonstration house that features highly insulated construction; 100 percent solar power for both the house and the electric car; heat pumps for heating and cooling and for hot water; and heat-recovery ventilation.
Large’s home, at 173 Griffith Farm Road, Sequim, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m..
