SEQUIM — Waterfront Day will bring a “public paddle,” games, demonstrations and live music to the John Wayne Marina on Saturday.
The celebration hosted by the Port of Port Angeles and Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the marina at 2577 W. Sequim Bay Road.
The “public paddle” will be on canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.
Also planned are demonstrations of the Port Angeles Rowing Club’s ergometers (rowing machines), face-painting, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescue demonstration, other boating and safety demonstrations, exhibits, booths and food.
A number of musicians are set to entertain the crowd.
Loni Greninger and the S’Klallam singers will kick off the program at 10 a.m., followed by the U.S. Navy Funk Band, Zorina Wolf and her Village Heartbeat Drummers, and three popular North Olympic Peninsula rock bands to cap the schedule: Black Diamond Junction, Bread & Gravy and Joy in Mudville.
“They play 65 minutes each of their most uncorked and uninhibited repertoire — big fun,” said Mac Macdonald, emcee and entertainment coordinator for the event.
The port hosts three events each year, Macdonald noted: Airport Day, Port Angeles’ Waterfront Day and Waterfront Day at Sequim’s John Wayne Marina.
“All three have a similar purpose. The port, as a local government agency manages publicly owned assets such as airports, marinas, a boat yard, commercial property and industrial waterfront,” he said.
The port uses “public events as an opportunity for the residents of Clallam County, the true owners, to come see their assets and how they are being used,” he added
Macdonald said that because of what he called the commercial/industrial nature of the business the port engages in, the general public has not always had the opportunity to see what they own and to interact with port staff and elected commissioners.
“Hosting these events is an opportunity to open doors and invite the public to come learn more about their port district,” he said.
“We are particularly grateful to the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe for their generous financial support that allows us to make the event possible.”
