Trivia Night to raise funds for scholarships

PORT ANGELES — The fifth annual Trivia Night Extravaganza takes flight again Saturday at the Masonic Lodge.

Doors will open at the lodge at 622 S. Lincoln St., at 6 p.m. for jazz performances, dancing, table selection, eating and perusal of auction items. The trivia contest will begin at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 per participant. Those interested can preregister teams at Port Book and News, 104 E. First St., or via email to the boosters at pahsband boostersvp@gmail.com.

The benefit, sponsored by Port Angeles High School Band Boosters, raises money for band student scholarships. Students who are in band for all four years of high school receive scholarships and this year there is a large class, with 24 graduating seniors, according to Booster President Candi Gates. For that reason, she said she hopes to see a good turnout.

“The message we can send on Saturday night and the rest of the year is that we care about our kids and their future,” said Doug Gailey, Port Angeles High School director of bands.

Trivia Master Andy Griffiths has said this night will be his swan song. After almost a decade hosting trivia contests in the Port Angeles area, he is prepared to give up what he calls his “bizarre and weird questions” about anything from sports, film, history, music and theater.

In addition to the trivia contest, a silent auction, a live auction filled with eclectic items and opportunities, and performances by the Port Angeles High School Jazz Ensemble are planned.

Tables are set up for teams of six to eight people. Those who lack a full team will be paired with other participants. Cash and other prizes will be awarded to the top teams.

This year’s auctioneer will be Jesse Reynolds, a Port Angeles High School band alumnus who played trombone and was a drum major in the PAHS band under Gailey’s direction.

Reynolds now volunteers his time assisting the high school’s marching band, according to Gailey. Reynolds, who graduated as a music major from Central Washington University, teaches choir at Stevens Middle School.

Some of the live auction items include a night at Lake Crescent Lodge with kayaking or paddle boarding, an opportunity to direct the Wind Ensemble or perform a solo at the spring concert, 50 pounds of troll-caught fish, season tickets to the Port Angeles Symphony, a framed original piece by local artist Todd Fischer, seating behind home plate at the Leftie’s game with the winning bidder throwing out the first pitch of the game, and, of course, Gailey’s famous cheesecake.

The Port Angeles High School Jazz Ensemble will perform such classics as “Satin Doll” by the Count Basie Orchestra, “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder, and “My Funny Valentine” by Babes in Arms.

Ensemble members are Peyton Cable, Kelsey Cammack, Mason Coppage, Christian Curtis, Nathan Denton, Sean Hanrahan, Zak Harrell, David Homan, Jake Jacobsen, WesLee Laughman, Kelly MacIntosh Ryan, Caleb Mathison, Jordan Nichols, Kinnear Pierzchala, Kayla Richmond, Kasey Roberts, Jane Rudzinski and Aron Trubow.

Event sponsors are Port Angeles Hardwood, Seven Cedars Casino, Green Crow, Interfor, Gordy’s Pizza, Lincoln Industries Corp., Rudd Orthodontics, Herman Brothers, Sound Community Bank, Laurel Dental and Wilder Auto.
