Tours part of this weekend’s maritime festival

PORT ANGELES — Port of Port Angeles commissioners Connie Beauvais and Steve Burke will narrate 30-minute bus tours of waterfront industrial sites during this weekend’s second annual Port Angeles Maritime Festival at City Pier.

The tours will leave from in front of the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce office, 121 E. Railroad Ave., every half-hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Participants will visit the port’s Port Angeles Boat Haven and boat yard, and Platypus Marine Inc. and Westport Yachts shipyard.

They also will tour the port’s Terminal 3, the main cargo pier for logs and forest products; Terminal 1, the deep-water berth capable of mooring vessels up to 1,200 feet; the Marine Trades Industrial Park site, where a plywood mill was built more than 100 years ago; and the maintenance shop and log yard, where $3.5 million of equipment includes five log stackers, four hydraulic grapple log-loaders, and two giant-bucket Caterpillar and John Deer wheel loaders.

The Maritime Festival kicks off Friday night with a 5 to 8 p.m. open house at the Port Angeles Yacht Club.

It continues with events from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at City Pier, including tours of the Lady Washington tall ship, a replica launched in 1989 by the Grays Harbor Historical Society.

The Hawaiian Chieftain, the Lady Washington’s sister ship, had to cancel an appearance at the festival, March Abshire, Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce executive director, said Tuesday.

Events include kayak tours, Coast Guard sea-rescue demonstrations and a Taste of the Crab Festival food court.

A list of activities is at tinyurl.com/PDN-Festival Events.

The chamber is producing the festival in collaboration with the the Port Angeles Yacht Club, the Coast Guard, the Port of Port Angeles and the North Olympic History Center, formerly the Clallam County Historical Society.
