Touring folk duo featured at Northwind Arts Center

RONA will perform tonight in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — Northwind Arts Center will welcome RONA, the touring duo of Whidbey Island’s Timothy Hull and Amsterdam-based Margot Merah, at 7 tonight.

Appearing as a special guest will be Port Townsend-based singer songwriter Zach Parker.

Tickets are $20 each at Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., or at RON Anorthwind.brownpaper tickets.com. They also will be available at the door.

They bring a mix of traditional and new folk songs with, organizers said, intricate harmonies and strong but tender guitar lines.

Hull and Merah knew of each other before they actually met.

Hull’s songs traveled across the Atlantic, making it to an Irish session in Amsterdam, where Merah first heard them.

And Merah’s album “Daughters,” with her duo The Lasses, came into Hull’s house via their mutual friend Kathryn Claire, who will appear Dec. 13 at Northwind.

So when the two songwriters stood face to face for the first time on Whidbey Island in spring 2015, introductions were hardly necessary.

Both musicians have a love for folk music, for songs that tell a story, for old as well as modern folk.

Port Townsend-based singer-songwriter Zach Parker will open the show.

Parker started his musical career in the Midwest and in recent years moved his focus from instrumental compositions to songwriting and singing.

A new feature of the Northwind Songs series is access to food and drink during concert intermissions from Tommyknockers, right next door.

For information, call 360-379-1086, email song writers@northwindarts.org or go to northwindarts.org.
