Toot Sweet clarinet ensemble to play music inspired by stories

PORT TOWNSEND — Toot Sweet, a clarinet ensemble in Victorian attire, will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The ensemble will play at Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St.

Admission to Trinity’s June Candlelight Concert is a suggested $10 donation, with children admitted free.

Proceeds will benefit local Port Townsend organizations and Trinity’s music and historic Victorian restoration program. Refreshments will be served following the performance.

Toot Sweet will play an array of musical genres from classical to contemporary.

Toot Sweet’s clarinetists come from a wide variety of musical background.

The theme of the evening’s program will be “Stories Told Through Music,” featuring music from different eras and countries.

Included in the repertoire will be selections from Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite,” Bizet’s “Carmen” and George Gershwin’s “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess,” as well as other pieces associated with storytelling.

The musicians will share the stories that inspired the composers to create the music.

Toot Sweet’s ensemble is composed of four instruments, including three B-flat soprano clarinets and bass clarinet.

The group includes players who have served as principal clarinetists in symphony orchestras, soloists with orchestras in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

The members of Toot Sweet all perform with other groups as well, including the Port Townsend Summer Band, Port Townsend Community Orchestra, Sequim City Band and Port Angeles Symphony.
