Tidepools to award winners on Friday

Celebration open to the public

PORT ANGELES — Tidepools magazine will celebrate the launch of the 58th issue with a party and award ceremony on Friday.

The community is invited to the celebration from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the House of Learning on the Peninsula College campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd. in Port Angeles. Copies of Tidepools magazine will be available.

The ceremony honoring winners of the Tidepools 2022 contest will be followed by a reading of selected works, and some of the artwork featured in the current issue will be on display.

The winners of the 2022 contest are:

Youth Categories

• Art ages 0-9 — First place, “The Screaming Sheep,” by Abigail Heistand of Port Angeles; second place, “Baby Yoda,” by Ivan Heistand of Port Angeles; third place, “Speaking Power,” by L.G.W. of Port Angeles.

• Art ages 10-13 — First place, “Shroomy Things,” by Elyse Kim of Sequim; second place, “Seafoam Feeling,” by D.E.W. of Port Angeles; third place, “Pringle and Me,” by Anouk Atwater of Port Angeles.

• Art ages 14-17 — First place, “Golden Gate from Alcatraz,” by Abby Sanford of Port Angeles.

• Writing ages 10-13 — First place, “The Lighthouse’s Domain,” by Noah Isenberg of Port Townsend.

• Writing ages 14-17 — First place, “Buried Truths,” by Maryrose Halberg of Port Angeles.

Student Categories

• Fine Art & Digital Art — First place, “Accelerated,” by Emily Spink of Port Angeles; second place: “Wolfsbane Cure,” by McKenzie Nelson of Port Angeles; third place, “Phantasmagoria,” by Aziliz Dupont-Huin of Port Hadlock.

• Photography — First place: “Living in a Bubble,” by Courtney Smith of Port Angeles; second place, “Alpine Perspective,” by Courtney Smith of Port Angeles; third place, “Romanesco,” by Anson Wallenfang of Port Angeles.

• Writing — First place, “Empty-is,” by Anson Wallenfang of Port Angeles; second place, “Baseball is Fine,” by Kenneth Flaherty of Port Townsend; third place, “Shared Experience,” by Carolynn Pype of Port Angeles.

Adult Categories

• Photography — First place, “Sunset at North Beach” by Patrick J Johnson of Port Townsend; second place, “Lake Crescent Sunset,” by Thomas Hightower of Port Angeles; third place, “Praying Mantis on Dandelion Seed Head” by Saundra Catiis of Sequim.

• Poetry — First place, “You Want to Write Nature Poetry,” by Angela Mordecai-Smith of Port Angeles; second place, “Autumnal,” by Sharon Gilmour of Port Angeles; third place, “December, Port Angeles, WA,” by Bruno Rescigna of Port Angeles.

• Prose — First place, “Vision Quest in a ‘63 Valiant,” by Katherine Kennedy of Port Angeles; second place, “A Retirement Party,” by Pete Barthell of Sequim; third place, “Samuel Explains the Box,” by Stirling Hall of Sequim.

• Music — First place, “Nebula 86,” by Dokatah Cole of Forks; second place, “Stoplight (Mtn. Blue),” by Anson Wallenfang of Port Angeles; third place, “When I Think about West 12th Street,” by Anouk Atwater, Valen Atwater, Senator Atwater, Malik Atwater and Vivian Wai of Port Angeles.

Tidepools Magazine, which is run and edited by Peninsula College students, has been published annually at Peninsula College for over 50 years and features original fine art, digital art, photography, poetry, short prose and music created by residents of the North Olympic Peninsula in Clallam and Jefferson counties.
