Theater workshops offered in Quilcene

QUILCENE — Key City Public Theatre is inviting children and teens to sign up for two youth theater workshops Aug. 14-15 at the Linger Longer Stage in Worthington Park.

The programs, open to all youngsters at the park at 151 W. Columbia St., include two workshops: one for kids age 8 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon, and one for ages 13 to 17 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Information about the fee, scholarships and and registration is at keycitypublictheatre.org and 360-379-0195.

Theater games, mime, dance, “all this acting stuff”: These make summer theater classes “super fun,” said Argus McEnerney, 9, a student in the youth workshop KCPT held at Chetzemoka Park in Port Townsend last week.

He’s a returning participant, and performed in the workshop finale on Friday: a showcase of acting and choreography from “Pippin” and “James and the Giant Peach.”

KCPT Artistic Associate Brendan Chambers and teachers Maggie Bulkley and Bry Kifolo will host the workshop in Quilcene. They encourage beginners as well as kids with performing experience to sign up.

At the end of the workshop’s second day, participants perform a short piece; the instructors choose the material for it after they find out what the kids are into.

The KCPT crew, Chambers added, is interested in collaborating with schools and other educators around East Jefferson County on future youth programming.

“I’m looking forward to seeing new faces, and teaching what we love to a new set of kids,” said Kifolo, who worked with students at KCPT in 2019. As artistic apprentice, she also appeared in productions including “Men on Boats” and directed the theater’s Cole Porter Revue.
