‘The Lion in Winter’ opens this weekend

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Community Players will open its winter production of “The Lion in Winter” with performances at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Tuesdays and matinees at 2 p.m. Sundays beginning this weekend.

The play, written by James Goldman, will be on the playhouse main stage at 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd. through March 10.

The doors and the bar open 30 minutes before curtain time.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for students and can be purchased online at www.pacommunityplayers. org or at the box office 30 minutes before each performance.

“The Lion in Winter” is a modern-day classic based on well-known historic figures.

It is set at Christmas 1183, when King Henry II is planning to announce his successor to the throne.

The cast includes his imprisoned wife, Eleanor, out for a Christmas visit, his three sons, his mistress Alais and her bother, King Philip of France.

The play follows the complex power struggle as each attempts to make Henry choose his or her option.

“It is about the love and hate between a man, a woman and their sons,” director Janice Parks said. “It’s also about politics, vengeance, greed and ambition.”

Cast members include Ron Graham, Angela Poynter, Deanna Eickhoff, Sean Stone, Kyle Bartholick, Charlie Medlong and Colby Thomas.
