The Great Piano Trios second weekend of Olympic Music Festival

PORT TOWNSEND — The second weekend of Olympic Music Festival will present “The Great Piano Trios” on Saturday and Sunday.

Performances will be at 2 p.m. each day at Fort Worden’s Wheeler Theater, 200 Battery Way.

Pianist and festival artistic director Julio Elizalde will be joined by violinist and Montreal Symphony concertmaster Andrew Wan and longtime festival cellist Jennifer Culp in a program of piano trios by Beethoven, Brahms and Mendelssohn.

Tickets for the trios range from $33 to $40 and can be purchased at www.olympicmusicfestival.org or by phone, 360-385-9699.

“Trio playing has been a critical part of my development as a chamber musician over the past ten years,” Elizalde said. “And it brings me so much joy to share the stage with two musicians whom I deeply respect.”

Elizalde’s first performances at the Olympic Music Festival in 2006 began with these same musicians after she and Wan formed the trio at Juilliard. Two years later, Elizalde and Wan took home the prestigious grand prize at the 2008 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

Artistic director of the OMF since 2014, Elizalde has performed throughout the world with internationally acclaimed artists.

Wan, in addition to his role as concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony, is a founding member of the New Orford String Quartet and a professor of violin at McGill University.

Culp is a former member of the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet. She also serves on the cello faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

During the concert, food and drink can be purchased at Taps at the Guardhouse across from the Wheeler Theater. Post the performance, audience members are invited to a question and answer session with the artists.

In its 34th season, OMF features festival patrons locally and as far as Asia and Europe. For more information about the festival, visit www.olympicmusic festival.org.
