‘The Alaska Suite’ urges audiences to take action on climate change

PORT TOWNSEND — “The Alaska Suite: a story of beauty, loss and hope,” a multimedia jazz composition about climate change, will be performed in Port Townsend tonight and in Sequim and Port Angeles on Saturday.

Nelda Swiggett, a Seattle-area pianist and composer, created the piece, which uses live music, spoken words, images and poetry “to connect audience members deeply and emotionally to the scientific realities of climate change and leave audiences inspired to take action,” she said.

The concert features a five-piece chamber jazz ensemble performing Swiggett’s original music.

It will be performed in Port Townsend from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave. Tickets are $10 to $18 at Eventbrite at PTTickets.

The Sequim performance will be from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave. Tickets are $10 to $18 at Eventbrite at SequimTickets.

The Port Angeles performance will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Lopez Ave. Tickets are $10 to $18 at Eventbrite at PATickets.

The events are co-hosted by two local nonprofits: Olympic Climate Action and Local 20/20, and sponsored by a variety of local businesses and organizations.

Audience response has included comments saying, “It touches the emotional edges of our understanding and invites action from a deeper place,” and, “The content was informative without being preachy; the music was magical.”
