Take-off on ‘Taming of the Shrew’ planned for Port Angeles Library

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Community Players Children’s Theater will present “The Taming of Katy Lou,” a musical take-off of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The free show will be at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Set in the American Old West, the stubborn and bossy Katy Lou is driving everyone in town crazy. The comedy show is full of cantankerous cowboys (including Stinky Jones, who needs his monthly bath), heartwarming heroes, outrageous outlaws and lovely ladies, organizers said.

The Port Angeles Community Players Children’s Theater is an ongoing program designed to encourage local young people to become involved with theater.

The theme for the 2019 Summer Reading Program is A Universe of Stories.

This summertime celebration, which encourages children to keep reading during the summer break from school, features a reading challenge with prizes and events for all ages.

Research shows that children who do not read during the summer experience “summer slide” and may lose up to a month of the instructional knowledge they gained during the previous school year.

Library summer reading programs have been shown to help alleviate the “summer slide” by providing access to books, enrichment activities, and encouraging young people to keep reading. The 2019 Summer Reading Program runs through Aug. 17.
