SEQUIM — “In a Sentimental Mood”? Want to learn about “Fascinating Rhythm” or “When the World Was Young”?
Then get ready for Sequim’s Burke Garrett, who’ll dish up a bit of musical history and tunes from such icons as Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Johnny Mercer.
The time and place? The Gathering Hall at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., at 5:30 this evening.
Admission is free, and the beverage bar will be open.
“I cover the popular songs from the early to mid-20th century,” Garrett said about his one-man show. “I talk about composers, lyricists and the history relating to song writing in the 20th century.”
In other words, Garrett will perform Great American Songbook music, those influential American songs from the early 20th century that have been recorded and performed by an array of singers, instrumental bands and jazz musicians.
This is Garrett’s comfort zone. He started his first band in 1955 at age 16 and continued to refine the Burke Garrett Orchestra for nearly 15 years, traveling throughout the Northwest.
He has played swing, blues and jazz for everything from the Seattle Auto Show and University of Washington’s homecoming to former Gov. Dan Evans’ Inaugural Ball.
After a career ranging from concert promotion to regional resort marketing, Garrett now devotes his time to playing and singing classics from the Great American Songbook.
