Symphony Chorus to audition singers

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra is inviting singers on the North Olympic Peninsula to audition for the Symphony Chorus at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Jonathan Pasternack, conductor of the orchestra, and Joy Lingerfelt, director of the chorus, will host the auditions at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave.

Together with the 65-piece orchestra, the chorus will perform music by Rutter, Mendelssohn and Handel at the Holiday Concert on Dec. 8, and “Flos Campi” by Ralph Vaughan Williams in the spring concert with guest soloist Richard O’Neill on May 4.

Both will be at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave.

Chorus rehearsals start three to four weeks before concert week.

At the auditions at Holy Trinity Lutheran, each singer will be asked to sing a capella a patriotic song of the auditioner’s choosing, and do some sight reading, Pasternack said.

Previous choral singing experience and music reading proficiency are highly desirable.

Members of the chorus should plan on singing in the two concerts in December and May, though it’s not obligatory.

“We’d expect a commitment for at least one of the programs and hope for both,” Pasternack said.

To sign up to audition, phone the Port Angeles Symphony office at 360-457-5579.

Pasternack already has more choral singing planned for the 2019-20 season.

“Next year, we’re planning on a Bach cantata in December and the Fauré requiem the following May,” he said.
