Surfing art on display Friday

PORT TOWNSEND — The “Third Occasional Surf Culture on the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Salish Sea Event” is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.

The free event will be at the Port Townsend Library at 1220 Lawrence St.

An eclectic mix of art will be on display. The artists are all from the “loose-if-indeed-real” Olympic Peninsula surf community, according to organizers.

“The works are their attempts to capture the moods and feel of our locale.”

Eight artists are currently in the lineup. In addition to the works of art on site, two screens and laptops will display additional examples from each artist’s portfolio.

Snacks, poetry, live classical music by Anabel Moore, and, because surfers are involved, some amount of the traditional “Talking story.”

The event is being curated by local librarian/ripper Keith Darrock. The lineup for this session includes Tim Nolan, Stephen R. Davis, Reggie Smart, Erwin Dence, Nam Siu, Jesse Joshua Watson, Christian Coxen and Shayanne Hoffer. It is possible that more will drop in.

Nolan, a boat designer, has provided a mix of watercolors and photography. Davis works in oil and acrylic, capturing waves, whales and people.

Smart blends indigenous Northwest themes with surf graphics. The preferred medium for Dence is pen and ink, while Sin, a marine scientist, presents images of Northwest fish, seaweed and other items dipped and pressed.

Watson presents waves and surfing. Coxen has been photographing from fishing boats and beaches. Hoffer has advanced degrees in art.
