Studium Generale to host traditional welcome ceremony

PORT ANGELES — The fall series of Studium Generale lectures will kick off with “Welcome to nəxʷsƛ̕áy̕əm’ Territory” at 12:35 p.m. Thursday.

The traditional welcome ceremony will be in the Little Theater at Peninsula College’s Port Angeles Campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., and it also will stream at https://pencol-edu.zoom.us/j/88184370617.

The ceremony is a partnership among the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and Peninsula College.

The series will feature experts, community partners and cultural celebrations throughout the fall quarter. The schedule includes:

• Peninsula College alumnus Michael Drum presenting “Explosive Welding” on Oct. 9.

• A preview of the fifth All-In Film Festival on Oct. 16.

• Carmen Watson-Charles presenting “Creating Common Ground” on Oct. 23.

• A presentation about the Olympic Cougar Project from Mark Elbroch on Oct. 30.

• A discussion with native artist Molly Troxler on Nov. 6.

• A roundtable discussion, “Honoring Veterans,” on Nov. 13.

• Alice Derry presenting “Native Plants of the Peninsula” on Nov. 20.

• A student-led discussion “What We Have Learned this Quarter,” will finish the series on Dec. 4.

The Studium also will host a special presentation of “My Heart is Good” with Port Gamble S’Klallam elder and former tribal chair Ron Charles and anthropologist Josh Wisniewski on Nov. 12.
