Studio sale on tap this weekend in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Visitors can peruse original work by Port Angeles artist Susan Martin Spar in her studio this weekend and enter to win a free painting.

Spar will host an open studio sale with guest artist Brandy Agun of Woodinville from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Spar’s studio, 72 Derrick Road.

Spar and Agun attended Georgetown Atelier in Seattle together. Both artists will perform demonstrations, show their work and sell original paintings, plus prints and cards. Many prices will be reduced for the show.

A special drawing for a free painting will be held. The winner does not need to be present both days.

Spar’s work has been featured recently at the Sequim Museum and regularly at Gallery 9 in Port Townsend and John Hansen Gallery in California. She was recently named “Artist of the Month” in June for Discover Port Townsend.

Spar graduated from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in 1972. She attended both Watts Atelier of the Arts in California and Georgetown Atelier in Seattle. Now, she teaches from her studio in Port Angeles.

Spar draws inspiration from the landscape and in those quiet moments shared with soft light on everyday objects, from glass to flowers, she said. Her figurative paintings range from nudes to narrative stories. Spar has been painting for more than 40 years.

Agun spent 10 years at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, focusing primarily on the figure. There, she developed skills painting in pastel and drawing. To deepen her skills, Agun studied classical drawing and oil painting for three years at Georgetown Atelier.

Ever intrigued with figures, Agun depicts scenes expressing their relationship to an environment and lately often paints the environment on its own.

Additionally, she enjoys still life where objects become characters as though in a play.

Aside from painting and exhibiting, Agun teaches at various schools in the Northwest, such as Gage Academy, the Kirkland Arts Center and the Northwest Arts Center.
