Story Slam planned Thursday at Olympic Theatre Arts in Sequim

SEQUIM — Olympic Theatre Arts and The Story People of Clallam County have collaborated to bring to Sequim a second Story Slam with the theme “Second Thoughts” from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

The story slam will be at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave.

General admission for the event is $10 per person or $8 for OTA or Story People members.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with beverages and snacks available throughout the evening.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.olympictheatrearts.org, at the box office, or at the door.

Reservations are encouraged.

The inaugural event was at OTA in May. It enabled the two nonprofits to evaluate public interest in holding such an event as an ongoing series.

“We were approached by local professional teller Ingrid Nixon to host the first event in response to a grant that she had received from the National Story Telling Network to hold an international story slam,” said Carol Willis, OTA executive director.

“The event was very successful with our Gathering Hall venue filled to near capacity. It made the decision easy to keep it going.”

For the first event, seven of the tellers were pre-selected to tell their stories.

For the ongoing events, including the one next week, tellers will be selected at random by pulling names from a hat.

Ten stories will be told during the evening, each no longer than five minutes, and they must respond to the theme of the evening, this one being “Second Thoughts.”

The stories must also be personal to the teller, true, and told without reading or notes.

To participate, organizers have suggested that potential tellers prepare a story in advance and arrive early to submit their names prior to the opening at 7 p.m.

For listeners, seating will be on a first come first served basis and there are no requirements other than preparing to be entertained.
