State Poet Laureate Tod Marshall, Alice Derry to read poetry

PORT HADLOCK — Librarygoers will be treated to a collection of poems representing each year of Washington’s statehood Wednesday.

Washington State Poet Laureate Tod Marshall, along with guest poet Alice Derry, will visit the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., for a night of poetry starting at 6:30 p.m.

They will read from “WA129,” a collection gathered from poets of Washington state, including Sherman Alexie, Tom Robbins and Tess Gallagher. The 129 poems recognize each year of statehood.

Marshall, a poet and professor at Gonzaga University, wrote “Bugle” (2014), which won the Washington State Book Award in 2015.

He is also the author of two previous collections, “Dare Say” (2002) and “The Tangled Line” (2009), and a collection of interviews with contemporary poets, “Range of the Possible” (2002).

Derry has published six books of poetry, including “Strangers to Their Courage,” which was a finalist for the Washington Book Award in 2002.

Born in Oregon, Derry was raised in Washington and Montana.

She recently retired after 37 years of teaching writing and literature, most recently as the 17th Writer in Residence at Peninsula College.

The Washington State Arts Commission and Humanities Washington co-sponsored the program.

The library suggests arriving early to ensure a seat.
