Squatchcon, other events planned on Peninsula

The second annual Squatchcon, improv, a teen lock-in and lectures are among the activities planned this weekend on the North Olympic Peninsula.

• Squatchcon Port Angeles Comic & Arts Convention continues through Sunday including an all-ages cosplay contest, panels and workshops, a mini-arcade and a market with 60-plus artists.

Events are split among the Vern Burton Community Center at 308 E. Fourth St., Red Lion Hotel at 221 N. Lincoln St. and Studio Bob at 118½ E. Front St.

The four-day passes — events began Thursday — for adults 18 and older cost $25; $15 for ages 13-17, and free for children 12 and younger accompanied by an adult. Day passes are not available. Will-call tickets are available to purchase online at squatchconpa.com or at the door at the Vern Burton Community Center.

Special events include a Cosplay and Costume Swap from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at the Vern Burton Community Center; a Comic Book Swap from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, also at Vern Burton, a Cosplay Costume Party and Awards Ceremony from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at Red Lion, 221 N. Lincoln St. and a Kids Book Swap from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Vern Burton.

Auditions for “The Nerd,” a show to run June 2-18, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.

Imagined Reality Improv will take the stage at Olympic Theatre Arts at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets to the show at the theater, at 414 N. Sequim Ave., are $15 at the door, online at olympic theatrearts.org or by calling the box office between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Paint & Sip art instructor BZ Zabora will teach a painting workshop in the Gathering Hall at Olympic Theatre Arts Center from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $25 for the class at theater, at 414 N. Sequim Ave., and include the class and all art supplies needed plus snacks.

Advance purchase is recommended. Tickets are available online at olympic theatrearts.org or by calling the box office between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

• Mia Torres will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. No cover charge.

• Martin Sosa will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Spirits Bar and Grill in the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. No cover charge.

Teen lock-in will be hosted at the Forks Public Library from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today.

The after-hours event put on by the North Olympic Library System is in the library at 171 S. Forks Ave.

Teens in seventh through 12th grades will enjoy snacks, a movie, games and crafts.

The lock-in was designed with input from the library’s teen advisory board and funded by local friends of the library groups.

• Anime and Manga Night will be hosted at the Sequim Public Library from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today.

The family-friendly meeting is at the library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Attendees will be able to watch anime, enjoy Japanese snacks, make origami, draw, color and talk about manga.

• “Spring Fungi: From Patch to Plate” will be presented at the Brinnon Community Center, 306144 U.S. Highway 101, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Langdon Cook will share tales and tips about finding and cooking with mushrooms; his presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a book signing.

Cook is the author of “Upstream: Searching for Wild Salmon, from River to Table,” “The Mushroom Hunters: On the Trail of an Underground America” and “Fat of the Land: Adventures of a 21st Century Forager.”

Conserving Washington’s Forests” will be presented by the Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s Climate Action Team at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The free public forum is part of a monthly series in the fellowship hall, 1033 N. Barr Road.

Sunday’s forum will highlight conservation efforts to manage and preserve public and private forests, especially old growth and legacy forests.

The presentation is expected to last 30 to 45 minutes and will include time for questions.
