PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble will present its Spring Quarter Concert at 7 p.m Monday.
The free concert will be in Maier Performance Hall, Building E on the campus at 1501 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Robbin Eaves of Joyce and Olga Palenga and Clare Wegener from Port Angeles will sing tunes composed by Irving Berlin (“Blue Skies”), Jimmy Van Heusen (“I Thought About You”), Stordahl/Weston (“Day by Day”), Dave Frishberg (“Peel Me a Grape”), Sérgio Mendes & Brasil ’66 (“Mas Que Nada”) and John Lennon (“Imagine”).
The 17-piece PC Jazz Ensemble will add instrumentals by Rodgers & Hart, Johnny Mandel, Billy Strayhorn, Thelonious Monk, Milt Jackson, Charles Mingus, Freddie Hubbard and others, including an original arrangement by the band’s director, David P. Jones.
The genres will include swing, bebop, the Great American Songbook, cool jazz, modern classics from the ’50s and ’60s, bossa nova, contemporary Cuban-influenced music and even a jazz waltz.
The group is currently a full jazz big band — six woodwinds, three trumpets, a French horn, a trombone, two euphoniums and rhythm section — and the various arrangements take full advantage of the many possible colors of jazz, according to a news release.
The performers in this band range from towns across the North Olympic Peninsula.
From Port Angeles there is Olga Palenga, clarinet/piano; Bob Bailey, alto sax; Kevin MacCartney, tenor sax/flute; Dick “Doc” Thorson, tenor sax; Mike Ehr, trumpet; Jordan Nicolas, trumpet; Garrett Marshall, trumpet; Sebastian Tolle-Meyer, French horn; Clare Wegener, euphonium/congas; Ron Daylo, trombone; and David Jones, keyboards/director.
From Sequim is Nicia Pfeffer on drums. From Port Townsend the band draws John Adams, alto sax/bass clarinet; and Al Thompsen, baritone sax. Gerardo Reyes on the euphonium hails from Forks.
The bassist, John Sanders, lives in Quilcene and one of the drummers, Tor Brandes, makes the trek from near Brinnon.
