SEQUIM — Historical researcher Michael Hemp will present a photo exploration of the origins of ecology in the Pacific Northwest in the 1930s from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The lecture, “A Whole New Tide Pool in Pacific Northwest Ecology: The Role of Cannery Row’s Edward F. Ricketts,” will be in the Hendricks Room at the John Wayne Marina, 2577 W. Sequim Bay Road.
Admission is $5 for the general public and free for Feiro Marine Life Center members.
Ricketts, a marine biologist dubbed the “Father of Ecology,” forayed all over the Salish Sea, and emerging research highlights unexpected and meaningful ways that Monterey’s Cannery Row and the Pacific Northwest are connected.
Hemp, who is originally from Berkeley, Calif., relocated to Gig Harbor in 2017 to focus on Pacific Northwest historical research and connections to Cannery Row.
Besides authoring four editions of Cannery Row history, he also has hosted a radio program, directed heritage marketing efforts, and written and published two historical fiction novels.
The event is followed by a book signing for the recently published expanded “4th edition: Cannery Row: The History of John Steinbeck’s Old Ocean View Avenue and Its Connections to the Pacific Northwest.”
The speaker series is co-hosted by Feiro Marine Life Center and NOAA Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary.
