Soroptimist garden gala blooms this weekend

SEQUIM — Forty vendors and six speakers are among the attractions of the 19th annual Soroptimist Gala Garden Show this weekend.

The show will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Sequim unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula at 400 W. Fir St.

Admission is $5. Proceeds will support Soroptimist projects.

Landscape design speaker

The special guest speaker will be Andrew May, a Port Angeles landscape designer, teacher of horticulture at Peninsula College and a columnist for the Peninsula Daily News.

May will speak on “The Olympic Peninsula: The Best Place to Garden in the World (So What Should I Be Doing Now?)” at 1 p.m.

All of the speakers are scheduled Saturday.

Gardening tips

From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Muriel Nesbitt, who directed the Clallam County Master Gardener program from 2009-12, and Bill Wrobel, past president of the Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County, will provide tips on gardening in the local climate with an emphasis on berries, deer repellent and how to plan the right plant in the right place.

Plan, build, maintain

From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Beverly Morrow, a Master Gardener, will tell how to plan, build and maintain a rain garden.

Re-potting orchids

Lorrie Hamilton, Master Gardener coordinator for Clallam County, will speak about orchids, telling listeners from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. how to re-pot orchids and encourage them to bloom again.

Creating groupings

From 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., Master Gardener Tanya Unruh will talk about creating and maintaining groupings of containers in a garden.

Coffee, hot tea and bottled water will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Lunch available both days

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., lunch will be offered, with white bean chili and a vegetable soup offered Saturday and TVP (textured vegetable protein) and bean chili and mushroom beef barley soup served Sunday.

Raffle prizes

Soroptimists will raffle off two garden wagons filled with gardening items donated by sponsors, a backyard wood-burning firepit and other items.

Tickets will be $3.
