Son to provide perspective of Ansel Adams at Old Alcohol Plant

PORT HADLOCK — Dinner, wine and a presentation Saturday revolve around the history of the Old Alcohol Plant and Ansel Adams’ legacy.

His son, Michael Adams, will present “Ansel Adams: Photographer and Conservationist, A Son’s Perspective.”

Tickets to the dinner and presentation cost $100, benefiting the nonprofit organization Bayside Housing &Services.

The Adams family holds a personal connection to the Old Alcohol Plant.

In 1909, Charles H. Adams started construction of the Classen Chemical Co.’s Alcohol Plant. It began operating in June of 1911 to process sawdust and raw material to distill into alcohol.

However, heavy competition caused the plant to shut down in 1913.

In 1948, Ansel Adams and his son, Michael Adams, visited the property to decide what to do with it.

Another 30 some years passed quietly. Then, the plant became an inn and marina, passing through several changes in ownership.

Bayside Housing &Services purchased the property, and the building opened again July 1, 2016, to provide temporary housing to low-income community members.
