COYLE — Despite their name, there is nothing sloppy about the musical chops of Slipshod, a musical duo set to perform Saturday evening at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center as part of the ongoing Concerts in the Woods series.
“They play a smooth blend of Bluegrass songs and ever-popular country tunes plus some originals,” said Norm Johnson, Coyle concerts founder.
“They came to Coyle last year and the audience loved their talent on the strings and their vocal harmonies, so we have invited them back again.”
The performance is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the community center, 923 Hazel Point Road.
Admission to the all-ages show is by donation.
Complimentary cookies and coffee will be offered at intermission.
Slipshod — hailing from Portland, Ore. — consists of Matt Snook on dobro and banjo, and Steve Blanchard on guitar and mandolin.
They met a number of years ago as part of the Northwest Bluegrass community and became fast friends and picking partners, according to their biography. Slipshod formed in 2012.
Different influences
They have similar musical styles, but draw on many different influences such as Gordon Lightfoot, Norman Blake, Simon and Garfunkel, and Tim O’Brien.
The musicians said they enjoy entertaining audiences with both their humor and musical skills.
Snook and Blanchard offer listeners a broad and diverse range of music, including originals, familiar melodies and dynamic instrumentals, according to www.slipshodmusic.net, with their harmonies and unique vocal interpretations adding to their precise instrumental talents.
Snook has entertained with a variety of ensembles including the Snook Family Band, Free Range and SugarPine, while Blanchard has performed with Bill Jolliff Bluegrass Gospel Band, Prairie Flyer, Jim Faddis and One More Ride, and SugarPine.
The community center is located at the southern tip of the Toandos Peninsula and is operated by the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation District with help from area residents.
