SEQUIM — Members of the nonprofit Sequim Youth Skate Park Foundation will host the inaugural Irri-Skation Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The festival is part of an ongoing effort to rebuild the Sequim Skate Park.
Whether on a skateboard, BMX bike, skates or scooter, riders can compete for a host of prizes from local and national businesses at the skate park in Carrie Blake Community Park, 202 N. Blake Ave.
To enter, riders are asked to provide a suggested donation of $10 with proceeds going towards the park rebuild.
The foundation’s most recent contest raised $3,000, organizers said.
At the event, roller skaters will be featured first, followed by scooters, free ride BMX and skateboards.
Roller skaters and scooters will compete in their own categories while BMX riders will compete as either beginners or advanced, and skateboarders will compete as beginners, intermediate or advanced.
Each rider is given one minute per run with warm-ups before every category.
First-place competitors earn a trophy, and raffles will be available throughout to win skate-themed and local business’ prizes. Some of the prizes and vendors include Volcom, Libtech and Greensweep among many others.
Foundation leaders and local skaters hope to raise funds through donations and grants to add multiple elements and fix the nearly 20-year-old park that users say has misplaced obstacles and a poor surface.
