PORT ANGELES — Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will host the class “Alexander Technique for Singers” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Margie V. Marrs will teach the course.

The Alexander Technique is a body and mind educational method that works with balance, breathing and movement, according to www.margievmarrs.com.

The method allows the persons exercising it to become aware of habits preventing them from functioning freely, and offers strategies for changing these habits, according to the website.

The aim is to relieve stress or stiffness while improving mobility and posture.

Participation in the class is by a $20 donation, with proceeds benefiting Scandia Kids, an after-school children’s crafts and dance group operated by the Sons of Norway, according to the release.

The Sons of Norway is a fraternal organization principally representing people of Norwegian heritage in the United States and Canada.

To RSVP, call 360-477-6627 or send an email to oleboat2@gmail.com.

After completing her graduate studies in piano and voice at the Royal Academy of Music (London) and Washington State University, Marrs taught voice, diction, vocal literature, vocal pedagogy and music theory courses at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from 1978 to 2014, according to her biography.

In addition to her work at Coe, Marrs is a visiting guest professor at Shenyang Music Conservatory in Shenyang, China, and has performed and conducted master classes throughout the Midwest and Asia.

In 2011, Marrs completed her teacher certification at Alexander Technique Center Urbana, in Illinois, with Joan and Alex Murray, who opened the facility in 1977.

Retiring from Coe in August 2014 as the Pearl M. Taylor Professor of Music Emerita, Marrs continues to teach Alexander Technique at Coe and privately in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.
