Singer, songwriter Johnsmith to perform at Fort Worden

Johnsmith will perform songs from his 7th album, The Longing Road.

PORT ANGELES — Folk singer-songwriter Johnsmith will perform at 8 tonight at Fort Worden State Park.

The doors to the venue — the Rainshadow Recording Studio in Building 315, 200 Battery Way — will open at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and available online at http://johnsmith.brownpaper tickets.com/ or at Crossroads Music, 2100 Lawrence St., or Quimper Sound, 230 Taylor St.

Johnsmith, who goes by a single name, was born into a family of 10 children in Dewitt, Iowa, according to Allmusic.com.

After learning to play the guitar at 19, he began writing songs — leading to a career that found him playing more than 150 dates a year.

A winner of the New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival, he also has won songwriting awards at the Telluride, Rocky Mountain Folks and Falcon Ridge Folk festivals.

His debut album, “Hole in the Clouds,” was released in 1998.

He then released the albums “To the Four Directions” in 2000, “Traveler” in 2002 and “Kickin’ This Stone” in 2004.

He has also recorded two duo albums with Dan Sebranek, “Runaway” and “No Turning Back,” and was part of the duo Smith &Mayer, which released “In the Blend.”

On April 18, 2006, he released his fifth solo album, “Break Me Open.”

This was followed up in 2009 with “Gravity of Grace” and in 2014 by “The Longing Road,” his most recent album.
