‘Since I Been Down’ screens today in PT, Thursday in PA

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College will screen the film “Since I Been Down” followed by a discussion in Port Townsend today and Port Angeles on Thursday.

The 2020 documentary “Since I Been Down” by Gilda Sheppard will be followed by question-and-answer periods and panel discussions at Peninsula College campuses.

The film spotlights Kimonti Carter and follows his efforts, and those of other prisoners, as they create a model of education that is transforming their lives, their communities, prisons and potentially our own humanity.

“Since I Been Down” showcases Tacoma as a community impacted by lack of investment in resources and the fear-based policies of the 1980s and ’90s that sacrificed and labeled their most-vulnerable children as irredeemable “super predators,” organizers said.

Here is the information about the screenings, both of which are free:

• Port Townsend’s event will be at 5 p.m. today at the Learning Center at the Port Townsend campus at 202 Eisenhower Ave. at Fort Worden.

At 7 p.m., Carter and colleagues will conduct a panel discussion in the lobby.

• Port Angeles’ event will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Little Theatre on the Port Angeles campus at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

From 12:35 p.m. to 2 p.m., Carter and colleagues will conduct a panel discussion.

Thursday’s panel discussion can be seen at https://pencol-edu.zoom.us/j/83024542567. Meeting ID is 830 2454 2567.

These opportunities are co-sponsored with PC Port Townsend, Magic of Cinema, Centrum and Studium Generale, and are made possible through contributions from the PC Foundation.
