‘She Tells Sea Tales’ Saturday for boat project

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center will host its fifth year of “She Tells Sea Tales,” stories from women who work and play on the water, at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. at the center, 431 Water St.

Tickets are $17 in advance or $20 at the door.

Female mariners will tell their stories in support of the Girls Boat Project, an ongoing program at the Northwest Maritime Center.

Presenters will include Kaci Cronkhite, Carol Hasse, Cait Miller, Bonnie Obremski, Sue Schaeffer, Kate Starling and Ava Veitenhans. Also offered will be art by K. Robinson and music by Ace Spragg.

Beer, cider and food will be available.

The Girls’ Boat Project is a program for middle school girls that encourages young women to work together and gain confidence through learning skills in boat building, woodworking and sailing. The program is led and taught by an all-female staff of educators and professional mariners.

The Girls’ Boat Project meets every Wednesday throughout the school year and culminates with a journey on Port Townsend Bay in the spring.

“She Tells Sea Tales celebrates the successes and tribulations of working and traveling on the water,” said Kelley Watson, Port Townsend High School Maritime Career and Technical Education teacher and founder of the Girls’ Boat Project.

“It celebrates the joys and frustrations of being a minority in a male-dominated endeavor.”

Tickets are available at www.2018shetellsseatales.eventbrite.com.
