‘Shadow and Light’ on exhibit at college through Dec. 6

PORT ANGELES — An artist whose drawing, painting and digital photography evolve from wandering in the woods will be the focus of a solo exhibition in Peninsula College’s PUB Gallery of Art titled “Between Shadow and Light” through Dec. 6.

Artist Kim Kopp will present an artist’s talk at Studium Generale at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in Peninsula College’s Little Theater at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Both the solo exhibition and the Studium presentation are free and open to the public.

An artist reception will follow in the gallery where light refreshments will be available, provided by the donors of the Peninsula College Foundation.

“I am a gatherer of things and walking in the woods is essential to my work, a way to begin,” Kopp said.

“My paintings evolve from the thousands of photos taken while wandering. Back in the studio I sort through these images waiting for a somatic response to color, shape, form or memory.”

In 1993, after completing her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Chicago in 1992 plus a bachelor’s degree from the school of the Art Institute of Chicago, Kopp moved to the Olympic Peninsula, landing at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Townsend.

There, she learned to work with wood and reshaped her vision of an art-making career.

Since that time, she has been an EDGE Professional Development participant and a GAP grant recipient, both awarded by Artist Trust, Seattle.

Kopp was an artist in residence at Jentel in Wyoming in 2013 and Centrum Arts in Washington. Represented by SAM Gallery in Seattle, she exhibits widely in the Pacific Northwest and nationally; she has works in several notable collections. Kopp lives and works in Port Townsend.

“My intention is to emphasize or eliminate, honing in on an essence found within a captured moment,” Kopp said. “The abstracted results are a response to light, shadow, wind, time and memory.”
