Sequim senior play ‘Be True to your School’ parodies 1960s high school life

SEQUIM — What do poodle skirts, the Beach Boys, greasers and malt shops all have in common?

Besides being hallmarks of the 1960s, these are all things that can be found in Sequim High’s Senior Class Play — “Be True to Your School.”

This year, Sequim High School Operetta Club dives into a parody about high school life in the ’60s. The show stars a group of excitable cheerleaders, the greaser Harley High Hogs, a chemistry teacher with an attitude (played by Samuel May), a much-loved football star (Tommy Hall) with his adoring fan club, and the science-loving Greta Gamblemier (Emma Gallaher).

The show, which began Wednesday and continued Thursday, will be on the stage tonight and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Sequim High School Auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave.

Tickets are $5 for Sequim High School seniors, $8 for ASB members, $10 for students and senior citizens, $15 for general admission and $25 for families. Cash only will be accepted at the door.

Director Laura Lorentzen, with assistance from Dave McInnes, leads the play.

The show revolves around the Pleasantville High School Pheasant’s rivalry with the neighboring Harley Hogs. The “Pleasant Pheasants” have, until now, never won a division title in football. However, things have changed since football playing heartthrob Moose Mulligan (Hall), showed up — if he can get his chemistry grade up.

The cheerleaders hatch a plan to get Moose a chemistry tutor — namely, the science wiz Greta Gamblemier (Gallaher). However, Moose and Greta learn more than just science facts during their study sessions, and discover that they, in fact, have chemistry.

The whole school, including the principal (Jonathan Heintz), Moose’s coach (Tim Porter), and the devoted fan club, wait with anticipation for Moose to take his make-up test.

“Be True to Your School” is the class of 2018’s Senior Class Play, which helps fund their big end of the year events — Senior Ball and Graduation.

The show runs about an hour-and-a-half.

The cast also includes Annabelle Armstrong, Olivia Barrett, Sophia Barrett, Jewell Bell, Joe Benjamin, Breelyn Bennett, Emily Bundy, Liam Byrne, Angela Carrillo-Burge, Ryan Chen, Lindsey Coffman, Anthony Cortani, Damien Cundiff, Kaitlyn Davis, Caleb DeMott, Maddy Dietzman, Audrey Hughes, McKenna Kelbel, Raymond Lam, Damon Little, Astrid Martin, Abygail Mundy, Tim Porter, Katie Potter, Gabi Simonson, Payton Sturm and Maggie van Dyken.

Cast members say they are excited to present this original play to the community, and hope to see everyone there.

Each show will feature a different classic car from the Sequim Valley Car Club including George Wreggit’s 1966 Ford Mustang.
