Sequim High Jazz Dinner Dance set for weekend

SEQUIM — The annual Sequim High School Jazz Dinner Dance will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Sequim High School cafeteria to raise money for the school’s band and color guard programs.

Tickets for the cafeteria event are $15 per person or $25 per couple, available at Full Moon Candle Co., 609 W. Washington St., Suite 13, or at the door.

The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the music will start at 6:30 p.m.

The dinner will feature a full Hawaiian-themed meal, including pulled pork and chicken, rice, rolls and salad.

Four attendees will also have the chance to win gift cards.

The event will open with the Sequim High School Jazz Band, directed by Vern Fosket, followed by a performance from the Stardust Big Band, local community jazz musicians.

Michael Springer, high school booster fundraiser chairman, said this event has been taking place in the community for well over a decade.

“Besides the holiday bazaar, the jazz dance is the biggest fundraiser we have,” Springer said.

He said that last year’s dance was the biggest turnout seen so far, raising $3,000.

Proceeds go to fund transportation to and from events, instruments, new uniforms and other needs of the high school band and color guard.

This spring, the band and color guard will travel to Anaheim, Calif., to perform in Disneyland’s Heritage Festival.

Springer said students must raise their own money to pay for the trip to Disneyland, but money that is raised from events such as the Jazz Dinner Dance help fund transportation.

Springer also serves as a classroom liaison for the band students and said he stops by the band classes once a week on his day off to play the trumpet with students and his daughter, Kylyan, who is in third-period band.

“Mr. Fosket has an amazing group of kids this year. They want to be there and they want to play. It’s amazing,” Springer said of the band students.
