Sequim City Orchestra to host free performance Saturday

SEQUIM — The Sequim City Orchestra will finish its 2023-2024 season with a free concert at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The orchestra will perform at Trinity United Mothodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The program includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 and Carl Stamitz’s Viola Concerto in D major, Op. 1.

Sky Gelder, the winner of the 2024 Nico Snel Junior Young Artist Competition, will perform the solo on the Stamitz concerto. Gelder is a freshman at Port Angeles High School.

The orchestra includes performers from various musical abilities and life stages, from adults who are lifetime musicians and others who haven’t touched their instrument in decades.

The nonprofit organization also conducts a youth strings program, which provides professional strings education to all interested youth.

The orchestra maintains an inventory of quality string instruments that youth can use at no cost and graduate to larger instruments as they grow.

The organization depends on private donations to fund music instruction, purchase and maintain instruments and award scholarships so that finances are not a barrier to learning to play orchestral music.
