SEQUIM — The Sequim City Band will present “Go West!,” its final 2018 outdoor Concert on the Lawn, at 3 p.m. Sunday at the James Center for the Performing Arts.
The band invites the public to the free concert on the lawn at The James Center for the Performing Arts, located in the north section of Carrie Blake Park. Enter from North Blake Avenue at the Fir Street intersection for on-site parking.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own portable lawn chairs and blankets for the concert.
The guest announcer will be Vicki Helwick and the conductor will be Tyler Benedict.
Just in time for the 150th anniversaries of the founding of the Wyoming Territory and the first “cowtown of the west” — Abilene, Kan.— the band will play music invoking the American West, according to a news release.
The insistent rhythms of John Williams’ “The Cowboys” will bring to mind the cattle drives that ended at the railway terminus of Abilene, organizers said.
In that same year, the railways pushed on from Abilene, further changing the landscape of the West.
A medley of Richard Rodgers tunes will include music from “Oklahoma!”
And no celebration of the West would be complete without a nod to some quintessential western movies — “The Magnificent Seven” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”
The late summer air will fill with these and other songs honoring New Mexico, the red rocks of Sedona, Ariz., and songs of river men who provided transport from the east to the jump-off points for western settlers.
The first concert of the band’s 2018-19 indoor series is slated for 3 p.m. Nov. 4, at the Sequim High School auditorium.
Other concerts are scheduled for Dec. 16 and March 10.
