SEQUIM — A movie- and musical-inspired afternoon of musical treats by Sequim musicians and others from across the Olympic Peninsula is planned at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Under the direction of Tyler Benedict, the Sequim City Band will present “Movies, Musicals & Marches” at The James Center for the Performing Arts, 350 N. Blake Ave. The concert and on-site parking are free to the public.
Part of the 2019 Concert at the James series, the band is slated to perform familiar pieces from well-known musicals and movies.
Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II were known for musicals with memorable songs and compelling stories with social commentary.
On Sunday, the audience will hear “Some Enchanted Evening” and “I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair” from “South Pacific” and Frederick Loewe and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner’s “My Fair Lady” songs, such as “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” and “I Could Have Danced All Night.”
The band also offers Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from “Evita” and “Memory” from “Cats.”
Guest announcer/vocalist Vicki Helwick will perform “Moon River” composed by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, from the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
Helwick will also reprise the lament “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables.”
Movie marches also will be part of the concert mix, including “The River Kwai March” from “The Bridge on the River Kwai” and “Colonel Hathi’s March (The Elephant Song)” from “The Jungle Book.”
To reach the James Center, enter the north section of Carrie Blake Community Park from North Blake Avenue at the East Fir Street intersection. Follow signs to parking and the outdoor stage and then settle in on the lawn to enjoy the concert.
The final concert of the “Concert at the James” series is Sept. 15, when the band presents “American Melodies.”
