Second Saturday Walk to focus on featured artists in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Studio Bob will hold over a show, “The Collective Works of Carolyn Guske and Robert Amaral,” with an artist reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the Second Saturday Art Walk.

For those unable to attend Saturday’s reception, Studio Bob, which is at 118½ E. Front St., will be open between noon and 3 p.m. Sunday.

The show will be up through December and private viewings are available.

Guske’s background includes 30 years as a painter in animation, said Bob Stokes, Studio Bob owner.

She got her start in ink and paint, then attended Fred Fixler’s California Art Institute for five years and went into a career as a visual development artist and background painter at Disney, Dreamworks, Warner Bros. and Sony.

Fifty of her animal illustrations and paintings were published in 2014 in the book “An Introduction to Heritage Breeds” and a coloring book for The Livestock Conservancy, Stokes said.

She currently teaches drawing and watercolor painting in Sequim.

Primarily a landscape painter, Amaral is drawn to all facets of nature, enjoying the challenge of drawing and painting birds and animals — exploring their color and form, Stokes said.

He holds a bachelor’s in printmaking from San Francisco State University and a master’s degree in medical illustration from the University of California at San Francisco.

Amaral spent 10 years working as a staff medical illustrator for Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, then 11 years as staff medical illustrator and coordinator of graphic services at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

There will be a no host bar serving beer and wine in The Loom during the reception.

Here are other galleries on the self-guided tour on Saturday.

• Harbor Art Gallery, 114 N. Laurel St., will feature its artist of the month, Gail McLain, during Saturday Art Walk from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

McLain grew up in Tukwila. After graduating from the University of Washington with a major in graphic design, she worked for Boeing as a production illustrator.

She left Seattle and settled in Sequim.

The arts have always been an integral part of her life, organizers said, and have included acrylic and colored pencil painting, lost-wax bronze sculpting and now the main focus, jewelry design and crafting.

Her venture into jewelry came after taking some classes from Paulette Hill. Having an art background, she was totally captivated by the challenges of a new artistic expression and has taught her own designs.

She is currently a member of Harbor Art Gallery.

• Landing Artists Studio, 115 E. Railroad Ave., will be open from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. during Art Walk with a sale table of marked-down items from all its artists.

The gallery still has a good supply of ornaments and unique gift ideas, said owner Pamela Dick.

There are original painted art pieces, art yarn, jewelry, painted rocks, fractals, hair accessories and scarves.

The Landing Artists Studio has five full-time and five part-time artists who create art and give classes on-site.

The public is always welcome to watch, ask questions and interact with the artists, Dick said.

• One of a Kind Art Gallery, 115 E. Railroad Ave., will host a reception for its artists during the Saturday Art Walk.

Refreshments will be served.
