Second Saturday to feature ceramics, erotic art

PORT ANGELES — Harbor Art Gallery and Studio Bob in Port Angeles will have special events Saturday evening during the Second Saturday Art Walk.

Harbor Art Gallery will feature the work of ceramic artist Terri Enck throughout the month of August.

Enck will be available at the gallery at 114 N. Laurel St., Port Angeles, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, as well as from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

Her work will be displayed in the special Featured Artist Room all month long.

Enck started her education in ceramics at Palomar College in San Diego, taking classes and retaking them for four years with different teachers to improve her skills each semester.

Working alongside potters who threw 6-foot-tall vases could be intimidating, but she said she loved learning from everyone. She sold her works, usually pots planted with succulents, at student sales and art fairs.

She said she just loves getting her hands in the mud and playing to see what happens.

“I like letting the clay tell me what to make,” she laughed.

“Listening to the clay” is what got her the name Mud Shaman. It was given to her by a Navajo Shaman who had purchased several of her “face pots” and commissioned a bowl for use during her healing ceremonies.

While visiting a friend on the North Olympic Peninsula nine years ago, Enck was drawn to relocate to Port Angeles.

The thing that made the biggest impression on her was the art scene, Laurel Street and Harbor Art Gallery, she said.

Studio Bob

The fourth annual Bring Your Own Erotic Art Show will be at Studio Bob on Saturday and Sunday.

The show will be on view from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday with special musical guest Tin Sandwich and from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Studio Bob at 118½ E. Front St., Port Angeles.

This free show for adults displays art by local artists of all media showcasing emerging and professional levels with the theme of Erotica.

Artist Christopher Allen will bring back his life-sized mannequins, “Adam and Eve — Tabula Rasa,” which can be decorated by visitors, and will showcase “Erotic Diffusion,” a video that takes images from music videos, movies and pop culture.

The clips are played on a large television screened with metal tubes and plastic that diffuse the imagery and give it a kaleidoscopic quality.
