Second Saturday Art Walk highlights Port Angeles artists

PORT ANGELES — The Second Weekend Art Opening will include Studio Bob’s “Midnight Cheeseburger” with painter Larry C. White and guest artist Nash T. White while Harbor Art Gallery features Port Angeles artist Nathan Shields.

Studio Bob at 118½ Front St. will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Harbor Art Gallery, 114 N. Laurel St., will be open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday with Shields on hand.

Both are free.

At Studio Bob, the exhibit will continue on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. On Saturday, live music will be provided by

Tin Sandwich and Guests.

Larry White is a self-taught artist, born and raised on the Olympic Peninsula, currently living in Port Angeles. Special guest Nash White is his 6-year-old son, who has been creating art since he was 3.

The older White said his art “is fueled by his life passions of skateboarding, music and food. Those passions are energetically expressed throughout his creations, by means of application materials and techniques.”

He works in a variety of mediums, such as acrylics, aerosols and enamels, and even incorporates foods into his creations.

His commercial background includes logos and artworks for Vandal Windsurfing, Homebrew Skateboards, Barhop Brewing and The Rail.

He began showing his works in 2005 at local coffee shops around the cities of Port Angeles and Seattle.

His work has been seen in 2007 and 2009 at Anderson Gallery and 2012 at Studio Bob in Port Angeles and 2013 at Studio RAWart Seattle, with more recent displays at the Pancakes and Booze Art Show Seattle 2022 and 2023.

More of his work can be viewed at Barhop Brewing and The Rail.

Nash White’s background stems from working alongside his father while creating.

Some favorite mediums include markers and colored pencils while drawing his favorite animated characters.

Harbor Art

Harbor Art Gallery in Port Angeles will feature Shields’ work throughout this month. Shields is showcasing two new series of block prints: Inky Caps and Jitterbugs.

“Mushrooms, skulls, and enormous dancing bugs… there’s really something for everyone,” Shields said.

Visitors can meet Nathan and other artists at the gallery during the Second Saturday Art Walk. His work will be displayed in the special Featured Artist Room throughout the month.

Known as reduction prints, his images are carved into a linoleum block a little at a time, with successive layers of ink in different colors printed onto paper.

“It’s kind of a time-consuming process; the pieces for this show have been in the works since February,” Shields said.

The reduction process ensures that only a limited edition of original prints exist.

Nathan has had a lifelong love of art making. He currently teaches art to high school students at Crescent School in Joyce, along with math and computer science.

Harbor Art Gallery also showcases work by local artists Bob Stokes, Cindy Elstrom, Carolyn Guske, Robert Amaral, Garret DeLaBarre, Terri Enck, Katie Graham, Tammy Hall, Susan Kantowitz, Ruth Kaspin, Nancy McFaul, Gail McLain, Roger Mosley, Eric Neurath, Miranda Petruska, Randy and Sallie Radock, Jodi Riverstone, Lance and Haley Snider, Eileen Webb, Kevin Willson and Andrèa Woods.
