Seattle Opera preview scheduled at Jefferson County Library this Wednesday

PORT HADLOCK — Opera will come back to the Jefferson County Library at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when Seattle Opera brings a free preview performance of “Kát’a Kabanová” to the library.

This style of opera preview offers more than just a lecture, said officials at the library at 620 Cedar Ave.

It provides an experience featuring professional singers and an accompanist in an hourlong presentation that takes the audience on a journey through the story and music of the upcoming main stage opera, they said.

The full performance by Seattle Opera will run Feb. 25 to March 11 in Seattle.

“Kát’a Kabanová” is a romantic tragedy inspired by Slavic folk songs composed by Leoš Janácek.

First performed in 1921, the opera is based on “The Storm,” a play by Alexander Ostrovsky. The opera was also largely inspired by Janácek’s love for Kamila Stösslová and weaves a dreamlike, visceral story of isolation and provincial oppression.

Seating is limited.
