PORT ANGELES — Ian’s Ride will host the three-day 74-mile Sea To Sound, a multi-modal group ride spanning the entire length of the Olympic Discovery Trail, beginning today.
Wheelchair users, bicyclists and even runners will be on the trail during the ride.
Ian Mackay, founder and executive director of Ian’s Ride, was an avid cyclist before a 2008 bicycle crash left him paralyzed from the neck down. He mastered a motorized wheelchair using a sip-and-puff device to the point that he traveled across the state of Washington in 2016 and in June broke a Guinness World Record by riding 184.4 miles in 24 hours in 15 laps on Sauvie Island near Portland, Ore.
As Mackay, an Agnew resident, has learned how to get around outdoors and on long treks, he has become an advocate for accessibility for all on trails and routes.
Today, as the ride begins at 11 a.m. at Camp Creek, organizers expect a representative from Gov. Jay Inslee’s office, with Port Angeles City Council member Mike French and Jefferson County Commissioner Heidi Eisenhour joining the ride later.
On Saturday, organizers anticipate that Chief Criminal Deputy Brian King of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office will participate.
Shuttles are available each day to pick up participants and take them to the departure sites.
