Screenings of film about tribal fishing rights begin

“Usual and Accustomed Places” streaming over Zoom platform

PORT ANGELES — Today will be the start of a collaboration between Magic of Cinema, Studium Generale and the House of Learning, PC Longhouse, as “Usual and Accustomed Places” is brought to the Peninsula College campus.

Audience members also will have an opportunity to meet virtually with the film’s director, Sandra Sunrising Osawa, a member of the Makah Tribal Nation and a Peninsula College alumna, who has spend her award-winning career giving voice to Indigenous rights and concerns, organizers said.

“Usual and Accustomed Places” is the story of Pacific Northwest tribes’ century-long struggle to uphold their fishing rights. The film has a special focus on the Makah Tribal Nation.

The first screening of the film will be at 4 p.m. today.

Others will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. and noon Tuesday and 6 p.m. Wednesday.
