Saturday: Choro live from Brazil and Seattle

PORT TOWNSEND — Before the bossa nova, there was choro — pronounced “shore-oh” — on the sultry streets of Brazil. This Saturday at 3 p.m., this music will flow — from across the Americas — as six performers collaborate in a live-streamed concert.

Centrum, which hosts a choro workshop every spring, will present the hour-long show featuring the workshop’s faculty members.

• Bandolim player and artistic director Dudu Maia will stream his performance from Brasilia, in Brazil’s central highlands.

• Clarinetist Anat Cohen and flutist-saxophonist Daniela Spielmann will play from Rio de Janeiro.

• Seven-string guitarist Douglas Lora and percussionist-pandeiro player Alexandre Lora will stream from the huge southeastern Brazil city of São Paolo.

• Pianist Jovino Santos Neto will be in Seattle.

Admission for this event is $10 per household at www.centrum.org/tickets. Phone sales hours, at 800-746-1982, are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

The concert will interweave lively sambas and classically melodic choro ballads — “just a really fun kind of music to listen to,” said Gregg Miller, program manager for Centrum’s jazz, chamber music and choro events.

On the ticket-sales end in Port Townsend, Centrum is using a new platform, TicketSearch, and ironing out the technical issues. Box office manager Owen Rowe is orchestrating the process for this and other online events; he urged patrons to purchase tickets well in advance — at least an hour beforehand to ensure delivery of the internet link in time for the show.

“Watching to make sure all the technology behaves properly means it’s actually more complicated than an in-person concert,” he said.
